As part of Madison's ongoing efforts to address housing needs, Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway has announced new goals aimed at expanding the city's housing options. These initiatives include an interactive tracker for the public to monitor progress and updates to the Housing Forward initiative guiding city actions over the next two years.
The plans build on previous strategies, including the 2024 Dane County Regional Housing Strategy report and the 2021 Housing Forward initiative. They provide a Madison-specific goal aligned with Dane County targets and incorporate recommendations from the City Housing Strategy Committee in 2024.
To accommodate growth and tackle one of the nation's lowest rental vacancy rates, Madison aims to create 15,000 new homes by 2030. Additionally, at least 25% of these homes—3,750 units—are targeted for long-term affordability at below-market rates for those earning 60% or less of the Area Median Income. This effort is expected to keep pace with population growth and contribute to a healthier vacancy rate, potentially easing housing price pressures.
