As the federal landscape evolves and another election season approaches, UW–Madison employees are reminded to adhere to guidelines regarding political activity and public advocacy.

The university prohibits activities such as using a wisc.edu email address for sharing petitions or contacting legislators for political purposes, engaging in political campaign activities with state resources, or participating in political activities during work hours.

Employees may engage in political activities as private citizens on their own time and without using university resources. If an employee uses their name and official title in such activities, it must be clear that this does not imply endorsement by the university of any policy position or candidate.

UW–Madison’s Office of University Relations, along with its State Relations and Federal Relations units, is authorized to advocate for public policy to advance the university's missions. Questions can be directed to federalrelations@uc.wisc.edu.

Campus guidelines detail UW’s policy on political activity and public advocacy for employees and provide FAQs on these topics.
