The University of Wisconsin–Madison's Food Science team is preparing to defend its title in the upcoming Institute of Food Technologists College Bowl. The team, consisting of Tori Budin, Philip Eberly, Lauren Smith, and Bea Sutton, claimed victory in the 2024 championship held in Chicago by defeating California State Polytechnic University.

In this trivia-style contest organized by the Institute of Food Technologists Student Association, teams from over 65 schools across eight regions compete for the national title. UW–Madison's team has a history of success in the competition, having won previously in 2019 and finishing as runners-up in 2023.

Lauren Smith, who now chairs the College Bowl at UW–Madison, highlighted their preparation strategy: "We keep track of points, discussed questions we don’t understand and have retained the random knowledge from the bank!" she said. Questions cover various topics including food science and technology, food law, and general food-related trivia.

The university's Food Science program integrates chemistry, physics, microbiology, and engineering to address food-related challenges. Many team members are enrolled in this program and engage with similar content as part of their studies.

Dr. Richard Hartel has been advising UW’s Food Science Club since 1987. "From my side," he noted about working with students like these competitors," it’s been a pleasure to work with such bright young adults."

Payton Gladem serves as president of the club while also connecting students with industry opportunities. Reflecting on her experience she shared: “This experience has helped prepare me for the corporate world.”

As new members are sought for next year's team due to eligibility rules barring past winners from re-competing Smith emphasized selecting individuals willing to study outside practice sessions who demonstrate confidence accuracy breadth topic coverage along with consistent attendance during regional competitions scheduled April hosted University Minnesota-Twin Cities where last year they faced off alone against them regionally

Smith expressed optimism regarding future participants saying hopeful they'll enjoy meeting others learning competitive dynamics firsthand
