Ten schools within the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) are set for construction or reconstruction over the next five years. This initiative provides the MMSD community with an opportunity to bring ideas for these schools to life. To kick off the process, high-level concepts have been created to help determine how best to utilize available space at each school.

"We are just at the beginning stages of envisioning the potential of each building," stated Scott Chehak, Senior Executive Director of Building Services.

MMSD plans to involve internal teams, students, and the broader community in gathering feedback. Engagement sessions are scheduled for March 12 at Sherman/Shabazz and March 13 at Black Hawk/Gompers. Planning for these events is ongoing, with more details expected as they become finalized. Groundbreaking is planned for February 2026.

Although concepts have been developed for all schools involved, initial efforts will focus on Sherman and Black Hawk middle schools, Gompers Elementary School, and Shabazz High School. The project schedule was determined based on MMSD’s Facilities Condition Assessment, which highlighted critical HVAC and plumbing needs along with mechanical systems that have reached or exceeded their life expectancy. Geographic location also played a role in scheduling decisions.
