Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin has expressed her thoughts following Governor Evers’ biennial budget address on February 18, 2025. In her statement, Chancellor Mnookin highlighted the importance of Governor Evers' recognition of the role that UW–Madison and other Wisconsin universities play in bolstering the state's economy and expanding opportunities for residents.
"We thank Governor Evers for recognizing the tremendous impact UW–Madison and the Universities of Wisconsin have in strengthening the state’s economy and growing opportunities for the people of Wisconsin," stated Chancellor Mnookin.
She emphasized that with Wisconsin currently ranking 43rd out of 50 states in terms of state support for higher education, there is a pressing need to invest in these educational institutions. She noted that such investment is vital as higher education faces uncertainty and potential risks regarding federal funding, which constitutes about a quarter of UW–Madison’s total budget.
"Our hard-working faculty and staff educate the next generation of talented students, innovate and support businesses and our workforce, and conduct life-changing research that improves lives in every county across our state," she added.
Chancellor Mnookin also appreciated the governor's initiative to fund a pay plan for state employees over the next two years. "This is essential for us, as we work to recruit and retain excellent instructors, top notch researchers and dedicated staff," she said. She stressed that full funding of this compensation plan would help retain top talent at the university.
The chancellor concluded by stating her commitment to working with both Governor Evers and state legislative leaders to ensure that UW–Madison receives a budget supportive enough to maintain an excellent university system expected by Wisconsin taxpayers.
