Tour an advanced cancer research facility and engage with experts at the UW Health | Carbone Cancer Center's upcoming Open House. This event is organized in collaboration with UW’s Science Expeditions to highlight cutting-edge cancer research conducted in Madison, increase awareness of new cancer trends, and inspire children towards scientific careers through interactive activities and lab tours.
The community is invited to attend this free event on Sunday, April 6, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Health Sciences Learning Center, located at 750 Highland Ave. Carbone's activities are part of several campus-wide Saturday Sciences events.
“As Wisconsin’s only comprehensive cancer center, we are proud to open our doors and offer a firsthand look at the life-saving work our scientists and health care providers are doing to reduce cancer’s burden for our loved ones,” stated Dr. Christian Capitini, Acting Director of Carbone.
Carbone scientists will conduct tours every 30 minutes of their laboratory facilities, explaining their work in advancing medicine. Attendees can participate in over 20 hands-on learning stations, enjoy Babcock ice cream, and explore inflatable colon, lung, and brain displays. The first 500 visitors will receive a complimentary thermal tote bag.
During the Open House, Dr. Capitini will lead a panel discussion where experts will address public inquiries about new cancer trends, prevention strategies, efforts to minimize health disparities, and promising future research areas.
The expert panel includes:
- Matthew Brunner, MD
- Cheryl Czerlanis, MD
- Kim Dittus, MD
- Kaitlyn Kelly, MD
- Vincent Ma, MD
- Ryan Mattison, MD
This year's event marks the 10th anniversary of the Breast Cancer Research Advisory Network—a group consisting of breast cancer survivors and co-survivors who contribute patient and caregiver insights for researchers involved in clinical trials design and grant proposal writing. These volunteers will join breast cancer researchers for a panel discussion highlighting their partnership's success. Participating researchers include:
- Lisa Arendt, PhD
- Amy Fowler, MD
- Apoorva Reddy, PhD
- Rubina Qamar, MD
- Malinda West, MD
