Don Wahlin, the founder of Stoughton Trailers, was recently inducted into the Wisconsin Manufacturing Hall of Fame during the Manufacturer of the Year Awards ceremony. This recognition by Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce (WMC) marks him as the 80th inductee since the Hall of Fame's reestablishment last year. Wahlin joins a distinguished list that includes industry leaders such as Jerome Case and Oscar Mayer.
The original Hall of Fame program began in the 1950s through WMC’s predecessor, Wisconsin Manufacturers’ Association, to honor individuals who made notable contributions to Wisconsin's industrial history. Last year, WMC revived this tradition with support from First Business Bank to continue highlighting the state’s manufacturing legacy.
Corey Chambas, CEO of First Business Bank, emphasized their commitment: “As a business bank, we work with many manufacturing clients every day... That’s why we are committed to being involved in helping shine a spotlight on the manufacturing industry in Wisconsin and its visionary, determined entrepreneurial leaders.”
Don Wahlin's journey began in 1961 when he acquired assets from a bankrupt company and founded Stoughton Trailers. Over forty years, he transformed it into one of North America's largest trailer manufacturers. During his induction speech, Wahlin credited his success to hiring quality personnel and effective debt management.
“It’s always been about more than just trailers,” said Wahlin. “It’s about the vision and collective effort of everyone who has contributed to this remarkable story and that starts with my family.” Many of his eight children now play leadership roles within Stoughton Trailers.
Wahlin expressed optimism for the company's future: “What excites me most is the future... The legacy we started is in good hands and will continue for years to come.”
Kurt Bauer, President & CEO of WMC, remarked on the significance of recognizing leaders like Wahlin: “We reestablished the Manufacturing Hall of Fame because of the importance of honoring... Don Wahlin is a perfect example of entrepreneurialism, legacy leadership and generosity.”
Beyond his career achievements, Wahlin served over two decades in the Air National Guard and established the Wahlin Foundation with his wife Carol. The foundation supports various community projects including local centers and parks.
In addition to these honors, Speaker Robin Vos provided a citation recognizing Wahlin's contributions. A video detailing his life was also produced by WMC.
