Greater Madison's labor market is performing well, maintaining one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country. The region's unemployment rate is lower than 94% of metro areas nationwide.

In April, the total number of jobs in the Madison Metro saw a slight increase compared to March. Notable job growth occurred in the information sector, which has experienced an average annual growth of 4% over the past five years. Within this sector, software publishing jobs have reached the highest concentration in the country. Additionally, education and health services contributed to job growth.

Housing permits approved in Madison Metro have decreased compared to last year, attributed to an unusually high volume of units approved in February 2024. However, permitting levels continue to surpass all pre-pandemic years, with numerous projects underway.

Passenger traffic at Dane County Regional Airport has returned to pre-pandemic levels, with a 5.3% increase in passengers arriving or departing this year compared to last year. The airport has expanded its service offerings with seasonal nonstop flights to Los Angeles and additional daily nonstop service to New York City.
