Meadow View Elementary School Principal Cynthia Bell Jimenez has received the Charles L. Hopson Racial Equity Principal Leadership Award. The award is given to school leaders who are purposeful, innovative, brave, and effective instructional leaders, and who support the professional growth of culturally relevant teachers.

Rick Mueller, Director of Elementary Teaching, Learning, and Equity for the Sun Prairie Area School District, said, “Principal Bell has high expectations for all, cares deeply about the people she serves, and is committed to boldly disrupting barriers that get in the way of people achieving their hopes and dreams.”

Reflecting on her recognition, Principal Bell stated, “The work of equity is both simple and complex. It is simple because we must deeply believe that every human being is here to shine with their own light—that we are all created to be loved, to be safe, and to have the rights and opportunities to thrive in every aspect of life. It is complex because we live in a society that too often does not embrace that truth, creating systems that oppress some and elevate others.

“This recognition is not just about me; it reflects the trust of our community, the leadership of the Sun Prairie Area School District, and the unwavering dedication of the educators, students, and families of Meadow View Elementary. Equity is like a team sport—it takes all of us. I feel privileged to work and learn alongside them every day, inspired by their courage and bravery.

“I often return to the words of Dr. Hopson: ‘This work is not for the faint of heart. It requires passion, conviction, and courage to be comfortable with not fitting in—or with having others not always feel comfortable—because you never shy away from keeping the uncomfortable topic of race front and center. As a racial equity leader, there will be times when your moral imperative—your unavoidable obligation in this work—will come with significant personal and professional sacrifice.’

“At a time when our nation and our communities can feel so divided, I encourage us all to engage in this work with bravery, kindness, trust, and grace toward one another.”

Principal Bell will be recognized at the 2025 National Summit for Courageous Conversation in October in New Orleans.
