Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway posted on Twitter about the “Let’s Talk Streets” initiative on Sept. 25 and included a survey for non-white people to add their voices to the project.
The initiative is lead by the Department of Transportation in Madison and aims to include street design as an aspect of racial justice. For “Let’s Talk Streets,” their mission is to include different communities within Madison to ensure that streets are safe, unpolluted and well-connected, according to MK Think.
“The @CityofMadison Let’s Talk Streets Campaign asks: What do YOU value when it comes to YOUR streets? Take the survey before Sept. 28 and have your thoughts heard,” said Mayor Rhodes-Conway in a tweet last week.
The EQT by Design survey promoted by Mayor Rhodes-Conway is specifically open to non-white people in the city for input on street design, and those that complete the survey will receive a $15 gift card, according to Madison365. Through the people's input, the Department of Transportation will better define a community's needs and transportation values by communicating with specific populations.
For citizens of Madison, the “Let’s Talk Streets” initiative emphasizes a push to move away from the “conventional approaches” of street design, which have historically prioritized white-collar communities above others, according to the City of Madison.
