It’s a good thing when your team wins, but for Badgers linebacker Noah Burks, Wisconsin’s hard-fought 20-14 victory over Army is memorable for another reason.
Moments after the Badgers dispatched the Black Knights on the night of Oct. 16, Burks, who hails from Carmel, Ind., proposed to his high school sweetheart, Chandler Backes, at midfield to the heartfelt delight of friends, family and teammates, the Wisconsin State Journal reported.
Backes, who has been with Burks since the pair were seniors at Carmel High School, accepted the proposal.
“It’s amazing,” she told the WSJ. “I mean, we’ve been together for six years, so I think we kind of knew we were [going] spend a life together. But it’s so amazing. I’m so happy. I love him so much and I’m so glad that I get to do this journey of life together.”
And given this is the age of social media, the football team’s Twitter account captured the once-in-a-lifetime moment in a one-minute, thirty-eight-second long clip.
It’s safe to say that Burks’ big moment overshadowed the four tackles he registered against the service academy, for whom his younger brother Logan plays for.
The victory moved Wisconsin to 3-3.
