The U.S. House Education Committee is calling on Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona to immediately launch a probe into a growing Sun Prairie, WI controversy where a student who identifies as transgender was allowed to shower next to 14-year-old students.

Wisconsin parental advocate Scarlett Johnson recently posted on Twitter that the U.S. House Education Committee sent a letter to Cardona on June 8, requesting that the Office of Civil Rights launch an investigation into the incident that took place at Sun Prairie East High School in March.

Soon after that, the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty (WILL) formally filed a complaint against the school district that cited instances of sex discrimination that were deemed to be in violation of the locker room policy set forth in the 1972 Title IX Amendments. This complaint was filed on behalf of the parents of the four freshmen girls impacted by the reported discrimination.

According to the complaint, on March 3, the victims were in the process of showering in their swimsuits in the girls' locker room when the transgender student in question entered the shower area and proceeded to shower without clothing. While initially facing away from the girls, the report adds the transgender student eventually turned, exposing their male genitalia to the point that the girls became uncomfortable and decided to leave the shower area.

"Following the school’s failure to sufficiently address the sexual harassment of the girls, who've been traumatized by the trans identifying man and the stonewalling of an open records request, @WILL is seeking an investigation and remedies from the Department of Education under the Biden Administration," Johnson added.

Johnson’s post also accuses school district officials of disregarding protocols in place for dealing with such a situation, including failing to notify the parents of the girls involved as well as the Title IX Coordinator about the incident. In addition, school officials failed to file a Title IX complaint, report the violation or provide any form of emotional support to the teens involved.

"What happened in the Sun Prairie Area School District is just one example of the consequences of the changes to Title IX currently being made by @usedgov under the Biden Admin," WILL attorney Cory Brewer added in a tweet. "Myself and my colleagues at @WILawLiberty are proud to speak out in support of girls and women.”
