Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway is taking a stance on gun reform in the wake of the deadly Colorado Springs gay nightclub shooting that left five people dead and at least 25 others injured.

“Until homophobia is culturally unacceptable, people will keep attacking the queer community,” the mayor posted on Twitter recently. “Until guns are well regulated, people will keep using them to kill us.”

Police have now charged 22-year-old Anderson Lee Aldridge with five counts of murder and five counts of conducting a bias-motivated felony causing bodily harm, alleging that he walked into the Club Q nightclub just before midnight on Saturday and opened fire; a recent AP News report said.

Authorities told CNN that Aldridge was only stopped when at least two people in the nightclub confronted him before police arrived.

Army veteran Richard M. Fierro was among the patrons who confronted Aldridge, tackling and beating him with his own gun in knocking him unconscious; a New York Times report said. Several 911 calls were made from the venue between 11:56 p.m. and 12:02 a.m., the time when the subject was captured.

A community commemoration for the shooting victims was held in a local park on Monday night.
