Construction on the planned Center for Black Excellence and Culture in Madison could began as early as 2023 as fundraising for the effort has picked up steam in the Madison area.
The recently passed federal government funding bill is set to pump $1 million into the project, with that funding contributing to the $36 million capital campaign that was first announced for the project in December. The $1 million government investment was finalized as part of the federal omnibus bill, as reported by Channel3000.com.
Supporters of the project insist the goal of the center is to use history and culture to empower young Black local residents to be leaders across the Madison area.
“It’s going to be something this community has never seen before,” Rev. Dr. Alexander Gee told Channel3000.com when announcing the project. “It’s something that’s going to become a national model. You’re going to see healthier people who are proud to be a part of Madison, and that’s going to cause significant growth.”
Designed by Black architects, artists, business leaders and experts, the center is expected to include an atrium, two theaters, a recording studio and more features.
