Baby formula is becoming difficult to find due to a strain on the product's supply. Registered dieticians and doctors can help people who are struggling to find formula.
During this shortage it is still important to not use expired formula.
"If it’s watered down that can actually be really challenging on their bodies to breakdown and can be dangerous to their kidneys," pediatric clinical nutritionist Camila Martin told the Madison Reporter. "If they are able to find an alternative use the instructions that are on the back of the can or reach out to your health care provider if you have questions.”
NBC 15 detailed programs that can help mothers through these times.
"Mothers who qualify can also find less expensive alternatives through Public Health Madison and Dane County’s WIC program," NBC 15 reported. "PHMDC’s communications coordinator Morgan Finke said they have added more alternative formulas to the WIC registry to meet the current needs."
Health officials talked about what products the programs fund.
"There’s an array of options for families to choose from in terms of which formulas are now approved to be used with that WIC card," health coordinator Morgan Finke said.
Health officials have recommendations on how much formula families should buy.
"She and Martin stressed that families should not purchase more formula than they need," NBC 15 reported. "Finke said families should purchase a maximum of a two-week supply."
Martin said she would not encourage families to buy everything off of the shelf, according to NBC 15.
