On May 10, campus leaders and student representatives from Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) reached an agreement to resolve the encampment issue at Library Mall. As per the agreement, SJP will dismantle the encampment and has pledged not to disrupt this weekend's graduation ceremonies or other campus functions. They have also committed to refrain from reestablishing an encampment on campus and to adhere to UW–Madison rules in their future activities.
The university expressed its appreciation for reaching a resolution with SJP and acknowledged the support they received from their faculty liaisons. The university stated, "This has been a difficult period for our campus, our nation and the world." It was emphasized that UW–Madison supports peaceful student protest, respects the First Amendment, and has maintained this stance throughout the year.
The university recognized that the encampment, named by SJP as the Gaza Solidarity Encampment, was driven by passionate feelings about the devastation in Gaza. Despite being in violation of Chapter 18, it served as a source of community for many participants. The university also acknowledged that some members of their community, particularly parts of their Jewish community, felt uncomfortable due to the encampment.
The statement reiterated strong condemnation of antisemitism, Islamophobia, hate and bigotry in all forms. It also recognized the impacts of war and displacement on many across the globe.
In response to concerns raised by encampment organizers, campus leaders have committed to facilitating access for SJP to meet with decision makers. The aim is to discuss disclosure and investment principles and enhance engagement with scholars and students affected by war, violence and displacement.
UW–Madison leaders are set to provide additional information to campus and look forward to celebrating Commencement activities with their community this weekend.
