Wisconsin families, educators, school board members, district leaders, and community advocates will gather on July 30-31 for the 10th Annual Wisconsin Public Education Network Summer Summit in Madison. The event aims to address themes of racial justice, educational equity, and the impacts of state-level disinvestment and privatization on students attending Wisconsin public schools.
The Summit is hosted by the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) at La Follette High School, which is nearing completion of a comprehensive renovation funded by a 2020 referendum. Additional support comes from Madison Teachers, Inc., and the Foundation for Madison Public Schools—longtime partners of the Wisconsin Public Education Network, a nonpartisan nonprofit coalition advocating for strong public schools in Wisconsin.
Highlights of the two-day event include:
- An Organizing & Action Workshop followed by a Welcome Reception at the Goodman Community Center on July 30.
- Remarks from Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Jill Underly; U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona; Madison Superintendent and 2024 National Superintendent of the Year Dr. Joe Gothard; among others.
- Featured speakers such as Jennifer Berkshire, coauthor of "The Education Wars: A Citizen’s Guide And Defense Manual"; Donald Cohen, Executive Director of In The Public Interest and author of "The Privatization of Everything"; Asma Elhuni, Lead Organizer at H.E.A.L. Together with Race Forward; Kevin Lawrence Henry from UW-Madison's Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis department; among others.
- Over 20 action-focused breakout sessions covering topics like supporting Wisconsin students, privatization and school funding issues, local level organizing, legislative challenges, and more.
Tickets are priced at $40 each (including lunch from Melly Mell’s Soul Food Catering), while MMSD staff can attend for free using tickets sponsored by MMSD.
