Madison College is introducing an Electricity Technical Diploma this year to help students secure high-demand, well-paying jobs in the electrical field. The global expansion into solar, wind, electric vehicles, and energy storage has increased the need for electrical workers.
“The opportunities in the electrical field are at all-time highs,” said Madison College electrical apprenticeship instructor Matthew Wilkinson. “The 'electrification of everything' is a national movement fueling the demand for electrical workers to expand and maintain our electrical infrastructure as consumers transition away from fossil fuels and move toward green energy production.”
The program covers general electrical concepts and basic skills in residential, commercial, and industrial applications. Students can complete the diploma in a year with 27 credits at an estimated cost of $4,648 in tuition and fees. Classes are taught by electrician instructors with real-life current experience.
Traditionally, electricians have learned through apprenticeships, which can be confusing for those without ties to the industry. Wilkinson emphasizes that this program enables graduates to explore the field before committing to a five-year apprenticeship.
The program aims to attract individuals interested in the electrical industry, including those uncertain if it's the right fit or where to start. It will also interest those previously unsuccessful in applying for an electrical construction apprenticeship and maintenance employees looking to upskill or change careers.
Michael Thill, another Electrical Apprenticeship Instructor at Madison College, highlights that the program seeks to provide opportunities to individuals beyond the predominantly white and male current electricians. “This program can be a great starting point for an education that could lead to advanced electrical degrees and help applicants stand out over other applicants,” Thill said.
