Residents and visitors in the City of Madison should be cautious of potential flash flooding due to expected heavy rain. The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch from 10 p.m. on Aug. 5, 2024, until the morning of Aug. 6, 2024.
The anticipated rainfall may push the city's storm sewer system to capacity, causing temporary flash flooding in certain areas. However, this event is not currently considered a major flooding incident.
Authorities advise against driving, walking, or traveling through flooded streets or washed-out paths as these areas can be deceptively deep. As little as six inches of water can knock an adult off their feet.
Flash flooding could occur in various parts of the city depending on storm specifics. Prone locations include:
- University/Midvale
- Mineral Point Rd. near Gammon
- Mifflin/Livingston
- E. Johnson/Third
- E. Johnson/Sixth
- Hoard/Sixth
- Sherman/Trailsway
- Odana/Grand Canyon
- Aberg/Packers
Despite elevated lake levels, they are not expected to significantly impact potential flash flooding from the forecasted storms. Engineering crews have been clearing debris from storm sewers and grates in priority areas to mitigate flooding risks.
