The annual arrival of new and returning Badgers on campus signals the start of another academic year. This busy period also presents an opportunity to incorporate sustainable practices and contribute to UW–Madison’s Zero Waste goal.

General Packing and Cleaning Tips

Planning ahead is essential. Creating a practical, comprehensive list can reduce stress and make the process more efficient. It is recommended to pack belongings in suitcases or reusable boxes and bags rather than purchasing new cardboard boxes. To save space and reduce waste, fragile items can be wrapped in towels or clothing instead of newspaper or bubble wrap.

Second-hand and thrift stores are valuable resources for saving money on necessary items. Similarly, unneeded items should be given away or sold rather than discarded. Donation bins for small to medium items are available in many apartment buildings near campus, while larger items can be donated in-store at local thrift shops.

For cleaning new spaces, reusable rags/cloths and mops without disposable pads are advisable. Homemade cleaning products are also an option.

Tips for On-Campus Residents

Bucky’s Packing List can help determine what should be brought to campus and what should be left behind. Coordination with roommates is crucial to avoid extra or unnecessary items.

When buying new items for rooms, unboxing them at home helps avoid bringing packaging material to campus. Proper disposal of packaging according to local waste and recycling systems is important.

On-campus residents will find separate collection streams for Styrofoam, mixed recycling, plastic bags, and trash near every residence hall. Breaking down cardboard boxes and taking plastic bags to the nearest residence hall desk collection container is recommended.

Each resident room is equipped with two bins: mixed recycling and trash. Familiarity with University Housing recycling guidelines before moving in will aid in correct waste sorting during the residence hall stay.

Tips for Off-Campus Residents

Coordination with roommates remains important to avoid bringing extra or unnecessary items.

The City of Madison’s Recyclopedia provides detailed information about correct recycling practices at off-campus residences.
