Chancellor Jennifer L. Mnookin issued a statement on August 22, 2024, regarding the Universities of Wisconsin budget request for the 2025-27 period. She emphasized the importance of a robust and healthy university system for the state's success.
"A strong, healthy Universities of Wisconsin is essential for the success of the state of Wisconsin," Mnookin stated. She highlighted UW–Madison's role as a significant economic driver in the state, contributing through research and providing a talent pipeline crucial for citizens and employers.
The Board of Regents has passed a budget request aimed at keeping UW–Madison and other universities competitive. Currently, Wisconsin ranks 43rd out of 50 states in public funding for universities, trailing behind neighboring states such as Illinois (1st), Michigan (3rd), Iowa (9th), and Minnesota (10th).
"Below average support is not what hard-working Wisconsin students deserve," Mnookin remarked. She noted that increasing support to the median national level would enhance accessibility, stimulate innovation in teaching and research, and improve student outcomes.
The budget also proposes investments in infrastructure at UW–Madison, including demolishing the aging Humanities Building and expanding University Housing to accommodate enrollment growth. Additionally, it addresses faculty and staff compensation amid a competitive job market.
Mnookin expressed her commitment to collaborating with colleagues at Universities of Wisconsin, business partners, government officials, and legislative leaders to ensure that these priorities are met. "I look forward to working with my colleagues...to make clear that the priorities identified in the budget request will maintain and further improve quality higher education for Wisconsin students," she said.
