Carmelo Sáez III, known to his students as Mr. Melo, has been honored with the title of Outstanding Educator by Wisconsin Education Association (WEA) Member Benefits in collaboration with UW-Madison Athletics. This recognition highlights his contributions as a band and music teacher at Whitehorse Middle School.

The award was presented to Sáez on September 24 during a surprise event attended by Whitehorse band students, school staff, WEA representatives, and members of Wisconsin athletics staff.

Sáez expressed his surprise at receiving the award, saying, “I always thought that what I did was under the radar, behind the scenes.” He emphasized the universal nature of music and its ability to connect people: “Music is universal and I find it can connect all of us in one way or another.”

With over three decades of teaching experience, including eight years at Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), Sáez has a rich background in music education. He grew up in the South Bronx, NYC, where he played in a drum and bugle corps. His academic credentials include a degree from Herbert H. Lehman College in New York and teaching credentials from UW-Whitewater. Throughout his career, he has taught adult education, math, and music at various levels.

Reflecting on his past experiences with music during his youth, Sáez noted how it helped him navigate challenging times: “Music kept me away from a lot of the craziness.” He also shared that through music he has met many notable individuals and gained valuable experiences to share with his students.

In his role at Whitehorse Middle School, Sáez uses music as a tool to create welcoming environments for students. On the first day of school this year, he set up a DJ booth outside to play popular songs for incoming students. In class, he selects relatable music pieces like “Do Re Mi” from "The Sound of Music" and Tito Puente’s “Oye Como Va” to inspire learning and self-discovery among students.

Sáez cherishes moments when students are ready to perform: “My favorite memories are when my students are ready to perform,” he said. He described their excitement as indescribable while noting their tendency towards self-criticism until they recognize their own talents.

WEA Member Benefits highlighted Sáez's initiatives at Whitehorse Middle School such as creating a national podcast and launching both the school's first musical production and pep band.

As part of this recognition for his work in education through music, Sáez will be celebrated during halftime at the Badgers' football game on October 5.
