Dr. Nita Ahuja has been appointed as the new dean of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) and vice chancellor for medical affairs. She will assume her role on May 15, 2025. Dr. Ahuja is a renowned surgeon-scientist with a history of leadership roles at leading research universities and health systems.
Chancellor Jennifer L. Mnookin expressed enthusiasm about Dr. Ahuja's appointment, stating, "We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Ahuja to the University of Wisconsin." Provost Charles Isbell Jr. added, "Dr. Ahuja’s track record for translating basic science into innovative new treatments while mentoring the next generation of physician-scientists is the Wisconsin Idea in action."
Dr. Ahuja commented on her new position, saying, "This is a remarkable opportunity to help lead the state’s flagship institution and the region’s hub for higher education."
Before joining UW–Madison, Dr. Ahuja chaired Yale University's Department of Surgery since 2018, being the first woman to do so in its history. Her tenure included leadership during the COVID-19 crisis and expansion efforts in surgical services.
Her career began at Duke University School of Medicine, followed by a residency and fellowship at Johns Hopkins University where she specialized in complex gastrointestinal cancers.
Dr. Ahuja will succeed Robert N. Golden, M.D., who has served as SMPH's dean since 2006 and oversaw significant growth in research funding and educational programs.
