Carnelian Art Gallery in Madison, Wisconsin, has announced its upcoming art exhibition, "Dreams In the Undergrowth." The exhibition is set to open with a reception on Friday, May 16, and will run until the end of June. The gallery is situated at 221 King St., Suite 102, in downtown Madison.
The opening coincides with Madison's Gallery Night, an event organized by the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA). Gallery Night provides opportunities for art enthusiasts and newcomers to enjoy various exhibitions and events across the city. MMoCA describes the event as one that "offers art lovers and art novices alike an opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of exhibitions, opening receptions, special events and demonstrations at venues throughout the city."
Artists featured in "Dreams In the Undergrowth" include Hanna Bruer, Rick Ross, Karen Laudon, Erin Liljergen, Susan Kaye, and Ray Zovar. Their work explores themes like the subconscious, human emotions, nature, and the environment through both two- and three-dimensional abstract artworks.
A notable event during the exhibition's opening reception is a live painting session by Hanna Bruer. Scheduled from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on May 16, Bruer will transform a blank canvas into a work of art, allowing attendees to observe her creative process. Her artwork often combines illegible text and grunge textures, reflecting her personal experiences with mental health. According to Bruer, her paintings serve as a "personal journal" to transform adversity into beauty.
Bruer's work has been showcased in various Madison venues, including the Majestic Theatre and Memorial Union Terrace, and during MMoCA Gallery Nights. Her story and paintings have been covered by several media outlets, including the Wisconsin State Journal, Madison Magazine, Isthmus, the Cap Times, and NBC News.
