The first fellowship program in Wisconsin focused on reproductive endocrinology and infertility is enhancing access to care for patients with reproductive health conditions and those seeking in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment at UW Health. This fellowship aims to train physicians and assist existing providers in delivering specialized care.

Described by Dr. Bala Bhagavath, the program's director at UW Health, as "crucial to expanding our training opportunities and improving access to fertility care services," this fellowship joins a limited number of about 52 such programs in the United States.

In late 2024, UW Health welcomed Dr. Jayapriya Jayakumaran as the first fellow in the program. Her work within the program includes providing fertility preservation for patients with cancer and other health issues and treating conditions like infertility, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and developmental anomalies of reproductive organs.

Reflecting on her time in the fellowship, Dr. Jayakumaran stated, "The fellowship has allowed me to train in a rigorous academic and clinical environment. It offers me exposure to diverse cases, cutting-edge research and exceptional mentorship in an environment where I have been treated like family."

She emphasized the value of working with medical students and residents, noting, "The collaborative environment and unwavering mentorship have been truly transformative, making this experience both enriching and deeply fulfilling."

Dr. Ellen Hartenbach, chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, highlighted the national shortage of trained REI physicians. She remarked, "This program is crucial to help develop skilled REI physicians and recruit them to stay within Wisconsin."

The REI Fellowship Program achieved initial accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education at the beginning of 2024.
