This July, the Madison Parks Foundation and Madison Parks will celebrate the 130-year anniversary of the Madison Park and Pleasure Drive Association (MPPDA), which was responsible for forming the current Madison Parks System. To ensure ongoing access and improvements to parks, the Madison Parks Foundation is establishing a new Parks For All Trust.

Lane closures announced for Old Sauk Road resurfacing
Payne and Dolan will commence resurfacing work on Old Sauk Road near the Beltline starting Wednesday, July 17, continuing through August 5. The project will be executed in two phases.

Lane and street closures scheduled for East Doty and Wilson Streets
Starting at 7 a.m. on Monday, July 15, RG Huston will commence work on East Wilson Street between South Pinckney Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. While contractors will maintain one lane of traffic open at all times, the designated lane may shift depending on the work being performed that day.

Police Civilian Oversight Board seeks new members; calls for attorney applications
MADISON, July 11, 2024 — The Police Civilian Oversight Board (PCOB) is seeking nominations from the community to fill multiple vacancies on the Board. The PCOB works with the City of Madison’s Office of the Independent Police Monitor (OIM) to review and make recommendations regarding police discipline, use of force, and other policies. Additionally, the PCOB will engage in community activities, supervise the rollout of the complaint process this summer, and draft policy recommendations.

Madison seeks volunteers for annual fall food cart review
The City of Madison's Economic Development Division is seeking volunteers to assist in reviewing food vending candidates for the upcoming vending season. This annual public review process determines which businesses will be eligible to operate in the Mall Concourse Vending Area, extending a block beyond Capitol Square and State Street. The review period this year will run from Monday, September 9 through Saturday, October 5.

West Community Market to host new food scrap recycling initiative
Food scraps recycling drop-off begins at the West Community Market on Saturday, July 20, 2024. Individuals may drop off certain allowable food scraps at a designated booth for free. This is the third farmers market drop-off location residents can choose from when disposing of food scraps for composting.

The City of Madison has awarded Miron Construction the bid to build the first-ever purpose-built men’s shelter in Madison. Miron submitted a low bid of $21,463,884, plus an 8% maximum construction contingency of $1,717,111, for a total of $23,180,995.

Wisconsin Supreme Court reinstates use of ballot drop boxes
Today, the Wisconsin Supreme Court restored the right to use safe and secure ballot drop boxes in the state. The drop boxes were prohibited by the same court in 2022 when the then-conservative majority decided in Teigen v. Wisconsin Elections Commission that because state law didn’t explicitly permit drop boxes, they were not allowed. The decision reverses previous rulings and allows localities across the state to once again permit voters to use this method of voting.
