Public Health Madison & Dane County has issued a public health alert following a spike in drug overdoses within the community. This alert is based on data from hospitals and EMS providers.

On July 8, 2024, there were six suspected overdose cases, including two fatalities. The number of overdoses reported exceeds the usual figures for the area. Additionally, there has been an increase in reports of drowsiness and sleepiness among individuals using methamphetamine and crack cocaine over the past week. These symptoms are uncommon for these substances, suggesting that other elements in the drug supply may be causing these reactions.

First responders, healthcare providers, people who use drugs, and their families should be aware of this increased risk. To receive email or text alerts about overdose spikes, visit publichealthmdc.com/spikealerts.

The following recommendations are provided for those who use drugs or know someone who does:

- Recognize the signs of an overdose: pale or clammy skin; blue lips or fingertips; slow or irregular breathing such as gasping, gurgling, or snoring; difficulty waking up.

- Always call 911 if an overdose is suspected.

- Avoid using street drugs alone; contact Never Use Alone at (877) 696-1996.

- Check in with friends or family members who use drugs.

- Test all drugs for fentanyl before use.

- Carry Narcan® (naloxone) and be prepared to administer multiple doses if necessary.

- Obtain safer use supplies like fentanyl test strips and Narcan® from the Syringe Services Program at Public Health Madison & Dane County locations: 2705 E. Washington Ave. or 2300 S. Park St., Madison.

- For treatment and recovery resources, contact the Behavioral Health Resource Center of Dane County at (608) 267-2244.

The public is encouraged to share this alert with others.
