Madison implements new Vision Zero projects for safer city roads
Since 2020, Vision Zero Madison has implemented annual safety improvement and speed management projects to enhance safe travel on city streets. These initiatives focus on incorporating Proven Safety Countermeasures into roadway infrastructure, such as high visibility crosswalks, green bike markings, rapid flashing beacon lights, and increased signal visibility. Additionally, speed limits have been lowered across the city in high injury zones.

Madison launches program targeting commercial building energy efficiency
The City of Madison has initiated the first year of its Building Energy Savings Program (BESP). Adopted by the Common Council in 2023, the program mandates that large commercial buildings benchmark their energy use annually and conduct energy system tune-ups every four years. The rollout is scheduled to occur between 2024 and 2026.

Lane closure announced for West Washington Avenue from June to October
Starting at 7:00 am on Monday, June 3, Integrity Grading and Excavating will begin construction on W Washington Ave, between Broom St and Fairchild St. Two-way traffic, one lane in each direction, will be maintained on W Washington Ave throughout the project. The lane closure is needed to replace underground utilities and to reconstruct the roadway.

Residents and visitors of Madison will have the opportunity to enjoy permit-free days in City of Madison and Dane County parks on Saturday and Sunday, June 1 and 2, 2024. During this weekend, no permits will be required for disc golf, dog park access, or lake access.

Crews monitor northside lift station running on backup generator after storm
City of Madison crews, in collaboration with the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD), are monitoring and staffing a critical lift station on the city’s north side, which has been operating on a backup generator since May 21, 2024. The power outage resulted from storms that hit the area, affecting the wastewater lift station located at 4100 Veith Avenue.
