A recent poll revealed that the majority of Americans are displaying feelings of pride for their country and flag as the 2020 Tokyo Olympics began earlier this week.

The survey, conducted by the Trafalgar Group, in collaboration with the Convention of States Action, gathered opinions from 1,094 likely general election voting respondents.

“Heading into the Olympics, these numbers demonstrate that—on issue after issue—America is still America, a nation of good and decent people. The public isn’t buying the lie that our flag is a ‘symbol of hatred’ or oppression, and our Olympians are proud to represent the stars and stripes in Tokyo,” said Mark Meckler, president of Convention of States Action.

The public polling and market research firm’s data revealed that 81.7% of Americans feel positive, patriotic emotions toward the American flag, while 43.6% feel pride, and 38.1% feel “patriotism.” Approximately 8.4% expressed feelings of “shame” or “suspicion” while 9.9% described "indifference," the Trafalgar Group reports.

Despite notable differences between the results of varying party affiliations, a collective majority spoke positively of the flag. Almost all Republicans formed part of the bulk at 93.9%, and 70.1% of Democrats agreed. According to the Trafalgar group, over 82.2% of independents and other parties also expressed positive emotions toward the flag.

“And for those few who said they feel shame, indifference or suspicion when thinking about our flag, I’d like to remind them that the right to express that view was paid for by the blood of men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect this symbol of freedom around the world,” Meckler said.

The Convention of States Action (COSA) serves as a grassroots political organization. Counting with about 5 million supporters nationwide, the agency’s primary focus is to propose amendments that enforce limitations on the scope of the federal government. The research firm’s website states that Real Clear Politics called it the "most accurate pollster of the cycle among those firms that polled multiple Senate and governor races” this year.
