Wisconsin Rep. Jimmy Anderson (D-Fitchburg) offered his praise to Gov. Tony Evers after he vetoed a series of pro-life bills recently.
On Friday, Dec. 3, Evers vetoed five abortion-related bills, one of which would have prohibited abortions based on the baby’s sex or race, according to PBS News Hour.
“I would like to thank Gov. Evers for protecting reproductive rights here in Wisconsin. Having a governor willing to make this promise is important now more than ever," Anderson wrote in a tweet.
Of the five proposed bills, one would have required doctors to tell women who are going to undergo any medication-induced abortions that they have the option to change their minds after the first dose, while another could hold doctors accountable for intentionally not providing life-saving medical care to or causing the death of a baby that is born alive during an abortion, making the offense a felony, according to PBS.
“BREAKING: I just vetoed five bills that would restrict access to reproductive healthcare in Wisconsin. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: as long as I’m governor, I will veto any legislation that turns back the clock on reproductive rights in this state – and that’s a promise," Evers tweeted.
As part of his reelection campaign, Evers has vowed to strike down all pro-life bills that come to his desk and has committed to fighting back abortion legislation repeals that are causes for contention across the country, according to FOX News.
The recent vetoes from Evers came only a few days after the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health case, which continues to challenge Roe v. Wade, the case that legalized abortion in 1973, according to KFF.
