The Madison City Clerk’s Office is urging voters to verify their registration status online at https://MyVote.wi.gov, particularly if they registered through street canvassers. The office has been receiving an unusually high number of incomplete voter registration applications from national organizations conducting voter registration drives.
To conserve taxpayer resources, the City Clerk’s Office recommends several options for registering or updating voter information:
1. Register online at https://MyVote.wi.gov if you have a Wisconsin driver license/ID and your address is current with the DMV.
2. Register at any Madison Public Library if you reside in Madison. Library staff are trained by the Clerk’s Office on voter registration and proof of address.
3. If registering with someone in the community, ensure they are wearing a Voter Education Ambassador pin, indicating they have been trained by the City Clerk on proper procedures.
Failure to follow these guidelines may result in not being registered at your current address. For instance, during the August Primary, many voters found their names missing from poll books because groups did not submit complete forms to the Clerk’s Office. These voters were able to register at polling places on Election Day.
A notable case involved Wisconsin Voices submitting approximately 1,500 registration forms when registration closed for the August Primary. Among these:
- 597 lacked proof of address
- 132 had insufficient proof of address due to various issues such as unacceptable document types or unreadable photos
- 3 were currently ineligible to vote
- 82 were duplicate registrations
Recently, the Madison City Clerk’s Office returned incomplete registrations to voters in 60 communities across Wisconsin, instructing them to send their forms and proof of address to their respective clerk's offices.
Madison residents who receive returned incomplete forms are encouraged to seek assistance at local public libraries for completing their registration process.
The primary goal of the City Clerk’s Office remains ensuring that each eligible voter can cast a ballot and have it counted.
