Respiratory virus season has arrived, prompting public health officials to encourage community members to receive their updated COVID-19 and flu vaccines.

Janel Heinrich, Director of Public Health Madison & Dane County, emphasized the importance of vaccination: “We’ve seen the positive impact vaccines can have in preventing serious complications due to respiratory illnesses. Getting your annual flu shot and updated COVID-19 vaccine is a simple but effective step you can take to stay safe and healthy season.”

The COVID vaccines have been revised to better target current strains, while the flu vaccine continues to prevent millions of illnesses annually. Heinrich explained, “Every year, the flu vaccine is updated to target the strains that are expected to circulate, and it’s developed through a careful, transparent process. This process is designed to make sure the vaccine works well so you can trust you’re getting the best protection available.”

Public Health offers these vaccines for adults and children without insurance coverage for immunizations or those with medical assistance like BadgerCare. Clinics are located on South Park Street and East Washington Avenue, with mobile clinics also available.

Heinrich stated, “No one should have to worry about not being able to access vaccines. We are working to ensure everyone who wants a vaccine in our community can get one. Vaccination clinics are being held at our regular clinic locations, local schools, and community centers to help meet people where they are.”

School vaccination clinics will continue throughout October offering free vaccinations for school-aged children five years and older. Appointments are recommended and can be made online.

Individuals with insurance may obtain vaccines from their healthcare providers or local pharmacies. More information on finding a vaccinator is available at vaccines.gov.
