The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) has expressed gratitude to voters for approving a $100 million operational and $507 million facilities referendum. In a statement, the district acknowledged the financial challenges faced by many but appreciated the community's decision. "Your support is an investment in our students, our community, and public education, and we are very grateful to you," the statement read.
The approval of the operational funds will enable MMSD to retain and attract high-quality staff, as well as sustain and expand programs such as early literacy, multilingual education, career exploration opportunities in middle schools, and co-curricular activities.
Additionally, ten schools within the district will undergo significant transformations thanks to the facilities funding. These updates aim to create modern and flexible teaching environments that are accessible and inclusive. The district plans to involve the community in finalizing each facility's design.
Despite this progress, MMSD highlighted ongoing financial challenges due to a structural deficit where revenues do not match costs. The district pointed out that it remains underfunded by state allocations and intends to engage with the community for future planning.
MMSD also committed to advocating for increased state funding for public education. "Our students matter. Students across the state matter. All deserve the best education possible," emphasized Nichelle Nichols, Board President, alongside Superintendent Dr. Joe Gothard in their closing remarks.
