City announces opening of Autumn Ridge Path with ribbon-cutting ceremony

The City of Madison is set to open its newest multi-use path, Autumn Ridge, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on December 12, 2024. The event will take place at 4346 Commercial Avenue on the city's east side.

The Autumn Ridge Path aims to enhance safety and accessibility for non-motorized transportation by creating a connection between Milwaukee Street and Commercial Avenue, including a new bridge over Highway 30. This project will better link neighborhoods separated by the highway and expand the area's bike network. It connects through local streets to existing infrastructure like the overpass at Portland Parkway, Garver Path, Capital City Trail, and downtown Madison. Future plans involve extending this network further northeast.

Starting from the south end, the path includes improvements in Hiestand Park where it has been widened to ten feet. It continues through city-owned greenway property and connects via Stein Avenue to a new segment near Thompson Road ramp off Highway 30. The path climbs in elevation before crossing Highway 30 on a newly constructed bridge overpass and descends onto Ziegler Road, connecting with paths within Sycamore Park.

Funding for this project comes primarily from a federal grant of $2.5 million supplemented by $2 million in local city funding. Construction began in early June 2025, with significant work focusing on the bridge overpass featuring three prefabricated trusses over Highway 30 and Commercial Avenue.

The public is welcome to attend the ribbon-cutting event. Media representatives planning to cover the event are requested to RSVP via email to Hannah Mohelnitzky.
