State Senator Julian Bradley | Wisconsin State Legislature
MADISON, Wis. — In response to increasing illegal immigration at the southern border, Wisconsin lawmakers have introduced legislation targeting crimes committed by undocumented immigrants in the state. Senator Julian Bradley, along with Senator John Jagler and Representative Rick Gundrum, all Republicans, have put forward Senate Bill 579.
The bill mandates collaboration between local law enforcement and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to ensure that undocumented immigrants who commit crimes in Wisconsin are transferred into federal custody. "As President Biden avoids dealing with the skyrocketing number of illegal immigrants crossing our southern border, passing this bill is the least we can do," stated Senator Bradley. He emphasized that "the effects of illegal immigration aren’t just felt on the border; their impact is nationwide."
Key provisions of the bill include requirements for law enforcement to verify the residency status of individuals unable to prove lawful presence in the country. It also calls for cooperation with federal agencies to detain undocumented criminals until they can be handed over to ICE. Additionally, a semiannual report from the Department of Justice would be required to increase transparency regarding crimes committed by undocumented immigrants in Wisconsin.
