Sun Prairie Area School District Superintendent Brad Saron (2023) | Sun Prairie Area School District
As the Superintendent of Sun Prairie Schools and the City Administrator of Sun Prairie, Brad Saron and Aaron Oppenheimer have jointly expressed their commitment to gun safety in a recent letter to the community. They emphasized that gun safety is a collective responsibility crucial for protecting families, schools, and neighborhoods.
"Gun safety affects all of us, and it is our shared responsibility to work together to protect our families, schools, and neighborhoods," they stated. The importance of proper firearm handling and secure storage was highlighted as essential for establishing a culture of safety.
For students, the focus on gun safety aims to provide a secure environment conducive to learning and growth. "We want to teach young people what to do if they see a gun, and we want them to feel comfortable telling an adult if something seems unsafe," the letter noted.
Parents and caregivers are urged to ensure secure firearm storage and recognize potential dangers. They play a significant role in responding responsibly in unsafe situations.
The leaders voiced support for initiatives like the Gun Safety Education Project led by the Sun Prairie Youth & Families Commission. This project promotes public awareness through education on secure firearm storage, reporting lost or stolen firearms, distributing gunlocks, among other activities.
Acknowledging the complexity of discussing gun safety, Saron and Oppenheimer believe collaboration among parents/caregivers, educators, law enforcement, and community members can enhance safety efforts. "We need your help to promote gun safety," they encouraged residents while suggesting discussions within families about available resources.
The topic was also discussed in detail on the latest episode of the District’s Homeroom podcast.
Sincerely,
Brad Saron
