Catholic Vote President: ‘France's serious demographic problem will not be solved by making abortion a constitutional right’

President of nonprofit organization Catholic Vote Brian Burch commented on France’s recent decision to add abortion as a right within their constitution. He criticized French politicians for trying to use death by abortion as a political solution to their problems.

“Like the American Revolution contrasted with the French Revolution centuries ago, today the U.S. Declaration of Independence's right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness now contrasts with the French constitution's right to death in the form of abortion,” Burch said. “France's serious demographic problem will not be solved by making abortion a constitutional right.”

CNN reports that the effort in France to enshrine abortion into its constitution began as a result of the U.S. Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade. The vote from both houses of the French Parliament was overwhelmingly in support -- 780 to 72. In celebration of the vote, the Eiffel Tower displayed "my body my choice" in lights, and President Macron plans a formal celebration on "International Women's Rights Day."

Abortion was legalized in France two years after the Roe v. Wade decision was issued in the United States. French Catholic Bishops reiterated their opposition to abortion, and the Vatican body Pontifical Academy for Life issued a statement that “in the era of universal human rights, there can be no ‘right’ to take human life.”

Madison, Wisconsin-based Catholic Vote is an advocacy organization that wants to “inspire every Catholic in America to live out the truths of our faith in public life,” according to the group’s website. Founded in 2008, its president is Brian Burch.
