In preparation for the upcoming Tuesday elections, voters will be greeted by new signs as they enter their polling places. These signs, featuring English, Spanish, Traditional Chinese, Hmong, and an icon for navigation, aim to enhance the voting experience for all individuals.
The initiative to create these new signs was a collaboration between the U.S. Alliance for Election Excellence and the City Clerk's Office, in partnership with the Center for Civic Design. Mayor Rhodes-Conway expressed the importance of inclusivity in democracy, stating, “We want our democracy to be accessible to every eligible voter. It’s important that we are providing voting information in a variety of languages. I appreciate the improvements the Clerk’s Office has made.”
For over two decades, City of Madison polling places have utilized signs printed on goldenrod paper to direct voters. The new signs, printed on white cardstock, feature simpler language and increased size to facilitate ease of understanding and visibility.
Poll workers will be seeking feedback from voters during the upcoming elections to determine the most effective versions of each sign for future use. The ultimate objective of the City Clerk’s Office is to ensure that every eligible voter can participate in the electoral process and have their vote counted.
