While college life can be demanding, students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have access to a range of free programs and services offered by Recreation and Wellbeing (Rec Well). These offerings include cooking classes, self-defense sessions, and various fitness activities.

Sophomore Katherine Wahr shared her positive experience with Rec Well's climbing wall and yoga classes, noting they are "accessible for people of all levels." The university provides three indoor facilities and two outdoor spaces for these activities, promoting student wellbeing and fostering campus connections.

The Wolf Teaching Kitchen offers students the chance to learn cooking skills on a budget. Participants in these classes get to enjoy their culinary creations. Wahr appreciated the organization and instruction in the kitchen. Additional cooking programs such as Badger Bites and Meal Masters are available at a cost.

The Mt. Mendota Climbing & Bouldering Wall is another highlight at the Bakke Recreation & Wellbeing Center. It features eight lanes for climbing and bouldering, accessible to all student members with necessary gear provided. Instructors assist new climbers during special events like New Climbers’ Nights.

Self-defense courses are also part of Rec Well’s six-week program, aimed at boosting confidence through physical training. Freshman Romy Khoury praised these classes for enhancing her self-confidence and safety awareness.

Group fitness sessions cover various disciplines including strength training, cycling, and yoga. Free introductory courses are available during specific weeks each semester. Students can explore cardio, high-intensity intervals, strength building, or mind-body exercises without charge.

Additionally, Rec Well conducts well-being workshops led by trained students to share strategies for personal improvement. Wellness coaching is also offered to help students reflect on their wellbeing goals.
