The SPASD School Nutrition Team is enhancing its meal offerings to better support student growth and learning. The team has announced several initiatives aimed at improving the quality and variety of school meals.
One key focus is the use of fresh, local ingredients. By partnering with local suppliers, the team ensures that students have access to seasonal produce. Each middle and high school now features a hydroponic tower for growing fresh romaine lettuce used in salads. Additionally, homemade roasted vegetables such as broccoli, squash, and green beans are being served more frequently, with an effort to reduce processed foods.
The menu is also becoming more diverse with the introduction of cultural dishes like seasoned Asian rice and homemade taco meat. Vegetarian and vegan options have been expanded to include plant-based chicken nuggets, buffalo wings, and spicy black bean burgers.
Educational initiatives are another aspect of the program's enhancement. The nutrition team engages with students by sharing nutrition tips and gathering feedback on breakfast and lunch options through meetings and taste tests.
"Healthy eating is essential for a child’s overall well-being," stated a representative from the nutrition team. "By providing them with nutritious and delicious meals, we are supporting students’ academic success and future health."
