Pope Farm Elementary uses hydroponics for hands-on STEAM education

Christine Davis, a teacher at Pope Farm Elementary School, has implemented a hydroponic vertical garden to provide students from kindergarten to fourth grade with hands-on learning experiences in STEAM subjects. The garden employs a water-based system that eliminates the need for soil, enabling plants to thrive.

Fourth-grade students Carlos De Leon and Ishitha Sigamala participated in an interview with Spectrum News alongside their teacher to discuss their educational experiences. The students are cultivating lettuce, green onions, collard greens, basil, and cilantro. These vegetables and herbs are then used in the school's cafeteria salad bar.

Through this initiative, students are not only learning about healthy eating habits but also developing science and engineering skills by experimenting with different variables in the plant-growing process.

For further details on their learning journey, Spectrum News offers an interview segment.
